OMAHA, Neb. – Freshman #Melanie Petersen# scored her first career goal in the 52nd minute to help lead the University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team a 1-0 victory over Northwest Missouri State Saturday night at Creighton University's Morrison Stadium.
UNO snapped a two-game losing streak with the win, improving to 10-5-0 overall and 8-5-0 in the MIAA. Northwest Missouri State fell to 8-7-2 and 4-7-2 in the MIAA with the loss.
After playing to a scoreless first half, Petersen put the Mavericks on the scoreboard when she stole the ball from the Bearcat defense just outside the goalie box and put a shot on goal, beating the fallen Northwest Missouri State goalie.
Nebraska-Omaha got another strong effort from its defense, holding the Bearcats to just four shots, all in the second half.
Junior transfer #Elizabeth Odorisio# made her first start in goal this season, stopping all three Bearcat shots on goal, earning her first career win as a Maverick.
UNO used a relentless offensive attack and wa able to control the ball for a majority of the contest. Overall, the Mavs out-shot the Bearcats 14-4, including a 10-4 edge in the final 45 minutes.
UNO will be back in action next week when it makes its final road trip of the regular season. The Mavericks travel to Joplin, Mo. to face Missouri Southern on Thursday Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
