OMAHA, Neb. – Washburn forward Danielle Ayala scored two second half goals to lead the Lady Blues past the University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team 2-1 Thursday evening at Morrison Stadium on the campus of Creighton University.
With the win, Washburn improves to 11-5-1 and 7-4-0 in the MIAA. UNO drops to 9-5-0 and 7-5-0 in MIAA action. The win for the Lady Blues also marks their seventh straight victory, a school record.
After playing to a scoreless first half, Ayala opened the scoring in the 70th minute on a free kick just outside the goalie box that beat sophomore goalkeeper #
Lauren Fox#.
Ayala netted her second goal of the match just six minutes later, when she scored on a loose ball following a Washburn free kick at 76:26.
Nebraska-Omaha cut the Washburn lead in half in the 87th minute on a goal by #
Mykala Hanson off a cross from Lindsey Nealon# but was unable to find the back of the net again.
Offensively, UNO out-shot Washburn 10-7 and held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
The two teams were playing at Creighton because of unplayable field conditions at the UNO soccer field due to rain.
The Mavericks will look to bounce back when they play host to Northwest Missouri State on Saturday, Oct. 25. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at the UNO Soccer Field.
