OMAHA, Neb. – Senior Casey Bigsby tallied a goal and an assist to lead the University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team past Emporia State Saturday afternoon at the UNO Soccer Field.
With the win, UNO improves to 9-3-0 overall and 7-3-0 in the MIAA. Emporia State falls to 3-10-1 and 1-8-1 in the MIAA.
Bigsby opened the scoring with a goal in the 41st minute when she got past her defender put a shot on goal just outside the box that deflected off the head of a Hornet defender and went in, giving the Mavericks the 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks added another goal just two minutes later off a corner kick by Bigsby who found Tara Wegehaupt who passed it to an open Melanie Patrick to give UNO a two-goal lead heading into halftime.
Becky Heffling added an insurance goal in the second half on a cross pass from Mykala Hanson who tapped in the goal in the 87th minute.
UNO got another strong effort from its defense, holding Emporia State to just three shots on goal.
The Maverick offense dominated play from start-to-finish, out-shooting the Hornets 24-5, including a decisive 14-3 edge in the second half. UNO also lead 9-1 in corner kicks.
Emporia State goalkeeper Jennifer Stillmock did all she could do to keep the Hornets in the match, collecting 11 saves.
UNO will look to continue its offensive momentum when they travel to Kirksville, Mo. For a noon contest with rival Truman State.
