TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team scored two goals in the final 10 minutes, but suffered a 4-3 loss to Washburn Saturday night in MIAA action at Yager Stadium in Topeka, Kan.
With the win, Washburn improves to 8-5-1 overall and 4-4-0 in the MIAA. UNO's record drops to 7-3-0 and 5-3-0 in the MIAA.
The Lady Blues showed they weren't intimidated by the Mavericks top 20 national ranking as they raced out to a quick 3-0 lead, scoring goals in the 14th, 33rd and 37th minutes.
UNO was able to cut the Washburn lead to 3-1, just before halftime on a goal from freshman defender #Melanie Patrick# at 44:45 in the first half. This notched the first career goal for the college rookie from Hastings.
Washburn would add another goal just five minutes into the second half on a drive down the sideline by Jessica Mainz, giving the Lady Blues a commanding 4-1 advantage.
Senior #Casey Bigsby# fueled a late Maverick comeback scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes of action. Bigsby scored an unassisted goal in the 80th minute when she drove to the top of the goalie box and unleashed a shot that got past Washburn goalkeeper Ashley Klone. She added another goal, off a corner kick by freshman #Brittany Battaglia#, just five minutes later.
Offensively, the match played fairly even. Corner kicks were even at three apiece and UNO held a slight edge in shots, 13-11.
The Mavs return to MIAA action next week when they play host to Missouri Western on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 18 against Emporia State at 1 p.m.
