The Maverick soccer team will meet Rockhurst Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at Morrison Stadium in Omaha as part of the second annual Kicks for a Cure. UNO, host Creighton University and local high school soccer teams are competing in the event to raise money and awareness in the fight against women's cancer.
Last year's event raised $107,000, with all proceeds benefitting Liz's Legacy, the cancer research fund started by former U.S. Senator David Karnes and family in memory of the late Dr. Liz Karnes. Senator Karnes and daughters Korey, Kalen, Kara and Laurel return as honorary chairs for this year's event.
All proceeds from Kicks for a Cure benefit Liz's Legacy and will be directed toward local research projects at both the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center and the Hereditary Cancer Center at Creighton University.
The weekend will kick off with a banquet for teams, sponsors and families on Friday, April 20 at the DoubleTree Hotel on 16th and Dodge Streets in downtown Omaha.
Kicking off the action on Saturday April 21 at Morrison Stadium will be Omaha Westside and Millard North at 11 a.m., followed by Nebraska-Omaha and Rockhurst at 1:30 p.m, Elkhorn and Gretna at 3:30 p.m., and Creighton and Marquette in the nightcap at 6 p.m.
An autograph session with the collegiate participants will take place immediately following each of those games.
