GRAND FORKS, N.D. –– Omaha Softball scored seven times in the second inning and cruised to a 9-0 five-inning win over North Dakota on Friday afternoon.
It was the 14th shutout win of the season for Omaha (31-9, 13-1 Summit League). Twenty-two of those 31 wins have come by five runs or more.
Alexis Wiggins retired the first 10 North Dakota (25-21, 2-9) batters she faced as she went on to throw a two-hitter and record her fifth complete game. The senior improved to 13-2 this season.
Wiggins received plenty of early run support as Omaha sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning.
Katherine Johnson led off the inning with a double. Two walks loaded the bases before Sammy Schmidt hit a two-run double to right. Alyson Edwards then scored on a wild pitch, Taylor Sedlacek drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, before Omaha got a pair of two-out RBI hits — Bailey Sample drilled a two-run double to right-center and Marra Cramer drove in one with a single to right.
Omaha added two more runs in the third as Rylinn Groff drove in a run with a single to right, and Sedlacek's RBI groundout made it 9-0.
Through the first three innings, every Maverick starter had scored at least one run except for Sedlacek, who drove in runs in the second and third.
Johnson finished the day with two doubles, while Sedlacek, Sample and Schmidt each had two RBIs.
The Mavericks return to Omaha to play at Creighton at 6 p.m. CT Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season next weekend at South Dakota.
