OMAHA, Neb. –– A record crowd at Connie Claussen Field saw six home runs Tuesday night as No. 1-ranked Nebraska outscored Omaha Softball 11-4 in the Mavericks' final home game of the spring.
The game drew a crowd of 2,320, shattering Omaha's single-game home attendance record. The previous mark was 1,537, set last season against Nebraska.
The Mavericks also set a program single-season attendance record, drawing 10,706 fans in 11 home games.
"That's unbelievable," head coach Mike Heard said of Tuesday's standing-room-only crowd. "Fans of Nebraska never disappoint you. They always show out. It was an awesome atmosphere."
Omaha got home runs from Taylor Sedlacek and Marra Cramer as the game was tied 4-4 through three innings, but Nebraska homered in each of the next three innings to pull away.
Omaha (29-9) struck first when Sedlacek launched a drive over the left-field bullpen for a 1-0 lead.
It was Sedlacek's team-best 14th homer this season, and it marked the fourth straight game that Omaha had homered in the first inning.
Nebraska (37-6), which has won 26 of its last 27 games, responded in the top of the second.
Two singles and an error loaded the bases with one out. A two-out walk tied it, and then Ava Kuszak followed with a two-run double off Sedlacek's glove. The Huskers made it 4-1 in the top of the third on Alexis Jensen's solo home run.
Omaha had a runner thrown out at home and stranded two runners in scoring position in the second inning.
"I think there were a couple of runs left out there, but that's how the game goes," Heard said of his team's offense.
But thanks to center fielder Cramer, Omaha tied it in the bottom of the third. Bailey Sample and Katherine Johnson drew walks to start the inning, then Cramer hit a three-run homer to left-center to make it 4-4. It was Cramer's ninth homer, matching her career high for a season.
But Nebraska seized control with home runs in the next three innings. Jesse Farrell hit a three-run shot in the fourth, Kuszak's two-run shot to center made it 10-4 in the fifth, and then Samantha Bland hit a solo homer in the sixth.
Cramer had two of Omaha's six hits on the night, while Alexis Wiggins pitched the last four innings and took the loss to drop to 12-2.
Omaha returns to Summit League action Thursday for the start of a two-game series at North Dakota.
