OMAHA, Neb. — With temperatures topping 90 degrees in Omaha, the Mavericks used a combination of solid defense and home run power to down North Dakota State, 2-0, at Connie Claussen Field on Saturday afternoon.
Alyson Edwards went 3 for 3 with her fourth home run of the season. Marra Cramer also went deep, as the Mavericks (19-7, 2-0) homered in their 14th straight game.
Maddia Groff earned her first save after 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief, combining with starter Alexis Wiggins on a four-hit shutout. Wiggins improves to 8-1.
The Bison (16-15, 0-2) threatened in the second off starting pitcher Alexis Wiggins. After Lileigh Nieto doubled off the wall in right-center, Omaha left fielder Ava Rongisch made a lunging catch on a hard-hit ball near the foul line to rob NDSU's Morgan Zimmerman of an RBI.
Omaha answered immediately in the bottom of the second, as senior center fielder Marra Cramer drilled a line-drive home run 206 feet to left, her seventh of the season.
Defense again provided support for Wiggins in the third when Cramer perfectly played a line drive off the fence in left-center, gunning down batter Jessica Delatorre at second base. Omaha leads the Summit League in fielding percentage, ranking 17th in Division I.
Starter Wiggins pitched scoreless softball into the fifth inning before giving way to Groff, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Edwards crushed a 234-foot home run to center field in the bottom of the sixth to give Omaha a 2-0 lead.
Omaha and North Dakota State wrap up their series at 12 p.m. CT Sunday at Connie Claussen Field.
