OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Men's Tennis newcomer Liam Spiers battled to a ranked singles win over Wichita State on Saturday.
 
Spiers, a graduate transfer hailing from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, faced off against No. 66 Zaid Mashni of Wichita State in the No. 2 singles flight. The Mavericks fell 6-3 in the first set, but once Spiers figured Mashni out, the game was on. Spiers forced the second set to a tiebreaker which he won 9-7. In the third and final set, Spiers won 10-6 for his first singles win as a Mav and an upset win.
 
Omaha secured the doubles point in the first half of match play. Senior Ethan Gaubert (Melbourne, Australia) and junior Kristian Thomas (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) opened up play with a 6-3 win over Luke Bracks and Amir Milushev from Wichita State in the No. 2 spot.
 
In the No. 1 doubles match, graduate Bryan Kuntz (Cuiaba, Brazil) and redshirt-sophomore Pavan Uppu (Pickerington, Ohio) fought through a tie to win 7-6 (5) over Alejandro Jacome and Ilias Hirani Worthington from WSU.
 
The Mavericks hit the road next weekend to face Western Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 31 and Wisconsin on Sunday, Feb. 1.
