Hockey falls 3-1 to (RV) Colorado College in game two

OMAHA, Neb. - Looking for a season sweep of (RV) Colorado College, Omaha Hockey led early in the second period before the Tigers rallied for a 3-1 win Saturday night at Baxter Arena.

With the weekend split, Omaha and Colorado College remain tied in eighth place in the NCHC standings with 15 points apiece.

Omaha, which won 3-1 Friday, had swept a two-game series from the Tigers in Colorado Springs in the fall.

Omaha (9-17, 5-12) set the pace early Saturday as the Mavericks had possession in Colorado College's zone most of the opening period. The Mavericks took 21 shots in the first 20 minutes, including 15 in the final 10 minutes.

Omaha took a 1-0 lead to the first intermission as Brett Hyland scored at the 7:56 mark. Trevor Wong, who had two goals and an assist Friday, earned an assist on Hyland's fifth goal of the season.

But Colorado College turned the tables in the second period when it outshot the Mavericks 16-4.

Five minutes into that period, Colorado College tied it, scoring in the final seconds of a power play.

Then with four minutes left in the period, Connor Hvidston took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity, scoring on a one-timer to give the Tigers their first lead of the weekend.

Omaha's best chance to even the game came in the opening seconds of the third period when there was a scramble in front of the Colorado College net. But Kaidan Mbereko made a save during that sequence as he finished with 30 saves.

Down 2-1 in the final minutes, Omaha pulled goalie Simon Latkoczy as the Mavericks looked to force overtime. But Colorado College scored an empty-netter from its end of the ice with 52 seconds left.

Latkoczy, who picked up career win No. 50, made 32 saves.

Latkoczy was making his 100th career appearance as a Maverick.

Colorado College outshot Omaha 27-10 over the final two periods.

Omaha will be on the road next weekend when they play No. 3 Western Michigan, the defending national champion.
