LINCOLN, Neb. – Omaha Women's Tennis dropped both matches at Nebraska on Sunday.
The Mavericks (0-3) secured the doubles point in the second match of the day for the first time in team history.
The doubles team of senior
Jacqueline Pearsall (Centennial, Colo.) and freshman
Shelby Smith (Leawood, Kan.) started the match on the right foot with a 6-3 win over Nebraska's Catherine Gagnon and Maria Taranova in the No. 3 doubles bout.
The nationally ranked doubles duo of
Nina Wiese (Flushing, N.Y.) and
Katelynn Kock (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) fought in the No. 1 doubles match that ultimately went to a tiebreak. The Mavericks secured the match win in a 7-4 tiebreak decision.
Junior
Khayli Buckels (Ballwin, Mo.) secured the only set win of the first match of the day with a 6-3 win over Nebraska's Emma Rizzetto in the No. 2 singles match. Wiese won the only set of the second match of the day with a 6-4 win in the first set of the No. 1 singles match, again over Rizzetto.
"We had some great matches to end the weekend," head coach
Adam Summitt said. "I felt the first match was one of the best we've played against Nebraska during my time here. We had match points for doubles and were with them in singles. We were able to close out doubles in the second match and I was really proud of the team. Doubles have been something we have been practicing a lot since September.
"We know we can compete with, and beat, these teams. One thing we need to do is really capitalize on key points during the matches. Ones that can control the momentum. It's so early in the season it's something we have to work through. Looking forward to our first home matches on Friday."
The Mavericks will welcome Concordia (Neb.) and Sioux Falls to Miracle Hill Tennis Center on Friday, Jan. 23. The first match of the day will begin at 11 a.m. CT and the second at 1:30 p.m. CT.
