OMAHA, Neb. - On a wet and chilly day, Omaha pitchers
Maddia Groff and
Alyson Edwards combined on a perfect game to down North Dakota 20-0 in game one of a Summit League twin-bill. The Mavericks' 12-run third inning crushed several
Connie Claussen Field records. The Fighting Hawks bounced back to take game two, 14-1. Both Summit League games were reduced to five innings due to the ten run rule.
The teams will conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CT at
Connie Claussen Field. All Omaha home games and all conference games stream on the Summit League Network.
Omaha (21-9, 2-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with the game one win over UND (17-17, 2-3). Groff (12-4) struck out seven of the nine batters she faced, followed by Edwards who struck out a pair in her two innings.
After scoring a pair of unearned runs in the first inning of game one, the Mavericks built a six-run lead in the second, highlighted by
Haley Wilwerding's three-run homer. Then in the third inning, Omaha forged an assault on several
Connie Claussen Field records, scoring 12 runs, the most in a single Mavericks frame since 4/3/16 (Claussen Field opened in 2021). The 20 total runs are the most in a game at Claussen Field. Wilwerding hit two homers in the game, joined in the long ball column by
Sydney Thomason and
Rylan Ewoldt, the most in a single contest at Claussen Field. Wilwerding finished with seven RBI; Omaha's total of 16 runs batted in is a Claussen Field record.
The Mavs offense ran out of steam in game two, as the Fighting Hawks got to starter
Alexis Wiggins (5-5) for six runs in 2.1 innings en route to the win.
Omaha visits Creighton Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. for a mid-week game before resuming Summit League play next weekend in Fargo against North Dakota State.
