Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - In their first of two games in Charleston, S.C. this weekend, the Mavericks won their third consecutive game as they bested The Citadel 5-2.
Omaha is back at .500 on the season at 7-7, while the Bulldogs have now lost three in a row to fall to 4-19.
"First match of the year outside and I'm proud of how the guys played," remarked head coach Hunter Clark. "Military schools are tough to play because of how disciplined the players are and we had to work hard on all courts."
For the second match in a row, the Mavericks swept the doubles round, starting with a commanding 6-1 victory from
Mikhail Korkunov and
Bryan Kuntz.
Ethan Gaubert and
Caleb Peterson followed up a few minutes later with a quick 6-2 win to secure the doubles point for Omaha, before the reigning Summit League doubles team of the week of
Christian Trevey and
Pavan Uppu held off a late comeback from Ted Bagwell and Diego Ladino to complete the sweep.
With Omaha not fielding six singles players and an opening win for The Citadel's Reece Beckendorf, Omaha soon found itself down 2-1. The Bulldogs' lead did not last long, though, as Uppu tied it up 2-2 with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Bradey Minnich. Korkunov would give Omaha the lead for good after bouncing back from a 6-2 loss in the opening set by taking the last two sets 6-3, 6-4.
Gaubert clinched the win for Omaha in similar fashion to Korkunov, dropping the first set against Bagwell 6-2 before cruising 6-1, 6-3 in the next two sets. Peterson would close out the match with one more Mavericks victory as he came back to take set one 6-4 and nearly swept the second set with a 6-1 win.
"Great to start this trip off with the win and feels good to be back at a .500 record," added Clark.
