OMAHA, Neb. - Elsa Vedral scored a season-high of 13 points in Omaha Women's Basketball's 92-48 loss to Creighton in Baxter Arena.
Wednesday's matchup between crosstown rivals was a matchup between two very young, new-look teams this season.
Much like Omaha, Creighton (5-5) is getting plenty of minutes from its freshmen. Six of Creighton's 11 players are freshmen and its top returning player, Kiana Lockett, is out for the season with an injury.
It was announced earlier Wednesday that Omaha's lone returning starter, junior
Cora Olsen (Omaha, Neb.), will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Olsen averaged 17.3 points in six games before being injured last month.
Creighton's young players, Gentry in particular, played well from the start as the Bluejays hit six 3-pointers in the first quarter.
Gentry, a sophomore who entered Wednesday with a career high of 11 points, hit three triples in the first three minutes and had 13 points midway through the first quarter.
Creighton also put together a 19-0 run midway through the first half to extend its lead to 34-7 with seven minutes left in the half. The Bluejays led 50-17 at the break when they were 10 of 23 from behind the arc. Creighton finished 16 of 35 on 3-pointers.
Omaha's best stretch of the night came in the third quarter when the Mavs (1-11) outscored Creighton 14-11 in the first seven minutes of the second half.
"We're still trying to figure out how to put 40 minutes together," Omaha coach
Jamie Carey said.
Besides Vedral's 13 points, freshman
Regan Juenemann (Crosby, Minn.) scored 10 points off the bench for the Mavs. Freshman
Avril Smith (Omaha, Neb.) grabbed 11 rebounds - it was the sixth time this season the freshman has had double-digit rebounds.
Graduate
Sarai Estupiñan (Cedar Park, Texas), who entered the night averaging 15 points a game, was hampered by foul trouble as she picked up her fourth foul early in the third quarter. Estupiñan finished with seven points and five assists.
Omaha returns to action at 3 p.m. CT Saturday in Los Angeles when it opens play at the LMU Tournament by facing Southern Utah.
