ST. GEORGE, Utah – Omaha Women's Basketball fell short at Utah Tech on Wednesday night suffering a 62-56 setback to the Trailblazers.
The Mavericks (1-2) got off to a slow start compared to Utah Tech (2-0) with only eight points in the first quarter to Utah Tech's 19. Omaha outscored the Trailblazers in the next three quarters, 48-43, but it was not enough to overcome that first quarter deficit.
Omaha really came to life in the third quarter, outscoring the Trailblazers 19-11 and shooting 33.3 percent from the field and the arc compared to Utah Tech's 25 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from beyond the arc. The Mavericks shot 50 percent from the line in the third while their opponent made no free throws during the 10 minute period.
Once again junior
Cora Olsen (Omaha, Neb.) paced the Mavericks' offense with 23 points. Olsen was 11-for-16 from the free throw line and made two of Omaha's four 3-pointers. Graduate student
Sarai Estupiñan (Cedar Park, Texas) tallied 21 points for a new career high.
Freshman
Avril Smith (Omaha, Neb.) remained the leading rebounder on the team with 14, seven offensive boards and seven off the defensive glass. Omaha got its hands on 57 total rebounds to Utah Tech's 44.
The Mavs put on a show at the foul line with 20 made free throws and a percentage of 62.5 percent.
The trek through Utah continues with a quick trip to Provo to take on BYU. The Mavericks will face their second Big 12 opponent of the season at 8 p.m. CT tomorrow, Nov. 13, at the Marriott Center.
