FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Three Mavericks finished in double figures Sunday as Omaha Men's Basketball fell to Colorado State, 97-74, at Moby Arena. Omaha moves to 0-3 on the young season while Colorado State improves to 2-0.
The two squads pushed the pace early as Omaha guard
Tony Osburn came out firing, hitting 4-for-4 from the field, including three triples in three attempts, in the first four minutes.
With eight lead changes coming out of the under-16 timeout, Omaha went scoreless for just over two minutes out of the break allowing the Rams to take a 19-18 lead early on.
Carey Booth and Josh Pascarelli got to work for the home Rams in a first half that saw seven Mavs etch marks in the scoring column, paced by Osburn in double-figures early.
Chris Crutchfield's Mavericks shot 47 percent from the field in the opening stanza with Omaha combining for seven made threes, all but one from Osburn (
Julian Margrave).
Overcoming a slow start to the second period of play, Osburn knocked down his sixth triple of the night to bring Omaha within nine. After the scoring cooled off on both ends of the floor,
Lance Waddles cut the deficit from 14 to 11, shooting 3-for-4 in his previous four attempts, at the first scheduled stoppage in the second half.
Waddles then fueled a 9-0 scoring run for Omaha, capping the night with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting. He finished his outing with four 3-point buckets.
Colorado State made 33 trips to the foul line compared with Omaha's 15 free throw tries. The Rams more than doubled-up the Mavericks on the glass with 43 rebounds to Omaha's 21 boards.
The Mavericks tallied 14 assists on 25 made field goals, led by a career-high six from
Grant Stubblefield.
Osburn finished his night with 24 points, shooting 50 percent from the field. The Fairfax, Mo. product owns nine career games of 20 points or more. Sunday's game was his fifth career outing of six or more made 3-pointers.
