Omaha’s Risk and Latkoczy win KJ Branding NCHC Players of the Week honors

Jan 13, 2025

OMAHA, Neb. – Graduate forward Brady Risk and junior goaltender Simon Latkoczy were named KJ Branding NCHC Forward of the Week and Goaltender of the Week for Jan. 6-12, the conference announced today.

(RV) Omaha has four student-athletes who earned weekly honors from the NCHC this season. Latkoczy joins junior defenseman Jacob Guevin as the only other Maverick awarded weekly honors twice in 2024-25.

Risk was pivotal in Omaha's sweep of then-No. 13 Colorado College. Between Friday and Saturday night, Omaha outscored the Tigers 8-3 on the Kemp Ice at Baxter Arena.

The Medicine Hat, Alberta native tied for the NCHC lead in goals (3) and points (4) during the week of Jan. 6-12. The 5-foot-9, 179-pound forward led all Mavericks in the series with four points (3G-1A) and netted his second collegiate hat trick on Friday night.

Risk's first goal on Friday night was the 40th of his collegiate career. He now sits within the nation's top 20 active goal leaders, with 42 to date. The forward also tallied his 90th career point on Saturday night with an assist on the game-winning goal.

The graduate transfer was plus-2 in the sweep and played on a line with freshman Myles Hilman and graduate Harrison Israels. The trio combined for 10 points (5G-5A) in the series.

Latkoczy was named NCHC Goaltender of the Week earlier this season (Oct. 7-13) after winning the 2024 Ice Breaker Tournament, where he was named the event's "Most Outstanding Player."

This is the Trencin, Slovakia native's fifth NCHC honor as Goaltender of the Week overall. During 2022-23, Latkoczy was also named Rookie of the Week by the conference for Feb. 6-12.

On Friday, Latkoczy appeared in his 70th collegiate game (69th start), made his 70th start on Saturday night and posted a record of 2-0-0. Among all active NCHC goaltenders, he is tied for the fourth most games played and has recorded the fourth-most wins (38).

The 5-foot-11, 177-pound goaltender finished third in goals against average (1.50), second in save percentage (.964) and second in goals against (3) among all NCHC goaltenders that played last week.

Among goaltenders in the conference who played at least two games last week, the Omaha junior finished second in goals against average, first in save percentage and allowed the second-least goals against.

Latkoczy led the NCHC with 78 saves last week.

Omaha travels to Oxford, Ohio, for a two-game series with NCHC foe Miami on Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. ET/6:05 p.m. CT.
