OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Hockey (10-10-0, 5-4-0 NCHC) finished its series against No. 13 Colorado College (10-9-1, 4-5-1 NCHC) with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night on the Kemp Ice at Baxter Arena.
The first period saw almost no action until senior forward
Zach Urdahl managed to steal the puck from Tiger defenseman Fisher Scott, who bobbled it. The Eau Claire, Wis., native split the defensive effort from Colorado College and glided through center ice until he buried one juking left to put it behind Kaidan Mbereko on the breakaway.
Stanley Cooley tied things up 1-1 at 14:53 into the second period, but that was the end of the Tigers' scoring on the weekend.
The line featuring freshman forward
Myles Hilman (1G-2A), graduate forwards
Brady Risk (3G-1A) and
Harrison Israels (1G-2A) combined for 10 points in the series. Risk led the Mavericks in points overall on the weekend.
Israels buried his only weekend goal less than two minutes into the final frame. Risk skated around the cage in the Colorado College zone and then sent it to the blue line, where freshman defenseman
Isaiah Norlin ripped a shot that hit Mbereko's pad.
The rebound hit a couple of Tigers (including Mbereko) and fell onto Israels' stick, who had a wide-open net to fill. Omaha led the Tigers 2-1 only 1:54 into the third period.
Hilman rounded up to nine points in the series when he potted Omaha's first empty netter since Nov. 15. The goal with only 38 seconds remaining cemented the Mavericks' second sweep of the season.
Junior goaltender
Simon Latkoczy stopped 33 shots in his 70th career start and 71st game as a Maverick.
The Mavericks held off all four Colorado College power plays tonight and are tied for the best penalty kill percentage on home ice this season in the nation at 96.3 percent.
Omaha travels to Oxford, Ohio, for a two-game series with NCHC foe Miami on Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. ET/6:05 p.m. CT.
