Mavericks Face Off With the Huskers Before Moving on to Northern Colorado

The Mavericks (3-15) play their one and only game of the season against Nebraska (13-5) when they open the week at the Huskers on Tuesday, before continuing their road trip out west with a three-game Summit League series against Northern Colorado (0-19).

Around the Horn
  • Omaha played went 1-3 last week, losing a one-run game to Creighton to start the week and going 1-2 vs. North Dakota State, only being outscored by four total runs on the week at 24-20. 
  • In a last-second doubleheader vs. NDSU on Saturday, Omaha pitchers stranded a combined 22 Bison runners through both games, while on offense Omaha batters racked up nine total extra base hits. Tyler Bishop led the way with two doubles in game one and his first triple of the season in game two.
  • After totaling 16 XBHs through the first nine games of the season, the Mavericks have recorded 25 XBHs over the last nine games.
  • Noah Greise led all hitters by going 5-for-9 in the doubleheader and 7-for-13 in the series to increase his average to .364.
  • Luke Gainer earned his second save of the season in game one on Saturday, retiring all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.
  • In his first relief outing of the season, Brayden Curtis tossed four scoreless innings with just four hits allowed in Saturday's nightcap.
  • Cardel Dick continues to impress behind the dish, throwing out his third batter of the season on Saturday to increase his CS% to 30%.
  • Charlie Bell had another quality start on Friday, allowing two runs in six strong innings. With eight strikeouts, he also increased his K/9 to 11.2.
  • Harrison Kreiling, making his first start of the season, recording his 100th career strikeout in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
  • With Grant Sommers hitting his first career home run on Saturday, all four Mavericks with a home run this season are newcomers (Burkhalter, Bishop, Dick).
  • Three Mavericks currently have an OPS above .800 on the season: Greise (.943), Bishop (.848), and Matt Goetzmann (.818). 
Scouting Nebraska
Nebraska is coming off a three-game sweep of Nichols last week in which they outscored the Colonels 34-10 to improve to 13-5 on the year. Last season the Mavericks took two of three from the Huskers in Haymarket Park.

Currently boasting a team batting average above .300, the Huskers have six players with averages of at least .295. Rhett Stokes leads the way with a .442 AVG along with a 1.070 OPS thanks in part to a team-high six doubles. Five other Huskers have an OPS above .800, including Josh Carson who leads paces Nebraska with five home runs and 21 RBIs. 

Brett Sears leads the rotation with a 1.44 ERA in five starts, though, no other starter has an ERA below 4.50, including Sunday starters Ty Horn (4.63 ERA) and Caleb Clark (10.00 ERA). Meanwhile the bullpen features seven pitchers with sub-4.00 ERAs, with former Maverick Rans Sanders posting 5.1 scoreless innings so far.

Head Coach Will Bolt is in his fifth year with Nebraska, compiling a 110-80 record. This includes a 34-14 mark to win the 2021 Big 10 regular season championship, earning him Big 10 coach of the year and the team's first NCAA Tournament berth since 2007.

Scouting Northern Colorado
Northern Colorado is one of just five Division I teams still looking for its first win after getting swept by St. Thomas last week to fall to 0-19 with an 0-3 record in the Summit League. The Mavericks went 5-1 against the Bears last season.

Kai Wagner (.949 OPS) and Garrett Fisher (.901 OPS) lead UNC on offense, combining for eight of the team's 22 doubles and six of its home runs. Meanwhile, Carson Gross leads the way with 11 RBIs and is the Bears' top stolen base threat with five steals.

Eight pitchers have made a start for Northern Colorado this season, with Dylan Smith's 10.80 ERA being the lowest among those with multiple starts. Trevor Landen, who has six appearances and one start, owns a 2.63 ERA. Out of the bullpen, Jackson Meier and Jake Carvajal are UNC's top weapons with sub-4.00 ERAs and sub-.250 BAAs.

Mike Anderson is in his second season leading the Bears. Prior to returning to his alma mater, he spent nine years leading Nebraska, compiling a 339-211 record and making five NCAA Tournament appearances and a College World Series berth in 2005.
