Mavericks Host SDSU on Final Saturday Night Game at Baxter

The Mavericks have their final Saturday night game of the season when they host South Dakota State at 7 p.m. on Alumni Night.

  • The Mavericks swept the season series from South Dakota for the first time since 2018-19 on Thursday when they rode a later surge to a 91-84 victory.
  • Despite being outshot in FG%, 3-PT FG%, and FT%, Omaha still managed to beat the Coyotes due to vastly superior numbers second chance points (18 to 7), fast break points (12 to 4) and points off turnovers (25 to 9).
  • Frankie Fidler moved up from 12th place on Omaha's all-time scoring list to 9th with1365 points after scoring 23 and becoming the seventh Maverick in the Division I era and the first since Zach Jackson in 2018-19 to top 500 points in a season. He also posted his 25th career game with at least 20 points scored.
  • Marquel Sutton had his second double-double in three games and his fourth overall this year after scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 boards.

  • Jaeden Marshall made his first start since November 19 at Air Force and scored 10 points.
  • Grant Stubblefield, Marcel Bryant, Nick Davis, and Biko Johnson are Omaha's top newcomers coming into this season. 
  • Stubblefield was named 6A Player of the Year and First Team All-State while at Blue Valley Northwest and Bryant was named the Austin Area Player of the Year at Cedar Ridge. Johnson is coming off his second season at Western Nebraska CC where he was named All-Conference and All-Nebraska, while Davis is fresh off winning GAC Defensive Player of the Year and a trip to the Sweet 16 of the Division II NCAA Tournament with Southern Nazarene. 
  • Fidler was Omaha's lone All-Summit honoree last season, earning an Honorable Mention. He led Omaha in scoring (14.7 ppg), rebounding (5.8 rpg), steals (1.2 spg), and free throw percentage (.887), with his FT% in particular ranking in the NCAA's top-25 for most of the season.
  • Head Coach Chris Crutchfield has a 32-46 career record. It marks his third season as a head coach and second with the Mavericks.

Scouting the South Dakota State Jackrabbits
SDSU slipped to second in the standings on Thursday after losing to Kansas City 72-67 to fall to 14-12 overall and 7-4 in the Summit League.

Junior guard Zeke Mayo continues to put up elite numbers this year, currently sitting in fourth in the conference in scoring (18.7 ppg, 487 points), ninth in rebounding (5.9 rpg), third in assists (3.7 apg), sixth in steals (1.2 spg), and top five in FG% (.454), 3-PT FG% (.379), and FT% (.828).  

Sophomore forward William Kyle III is still the league's most accurate shooter with a .625 FG%. He also sits in at fifth in rebounds (6.5 rpg) and third in blocks (42), while also averaging 13.6 ppg.

Head Coach Eric Henderson is in his fifth year leading the Jackrabbits and eighth year overall with the program. During his head coaching tenure, SDSU has won three Regular Season Titles and a Championship Title in their 30-win 2021-22 campaign.

All-Time Against South Dakota State
The Mavericks just missed snapping an eight-game losing streak to SDSU back in January when their comeback attempt was stifled and they fell 90-87 to drop to 32-55 all-time vs. SDSU. Sutton and Fidler both scored 20 points in the loss, with the former pulling down 10 boards for a double-double. Meanwhile, five Jackrabbits scored in double figures, led by Zeke Mayo with 21 points.
