Mavericks Set for Senior Day Showdown with UND and Home Finale vs. UST

Oct 9, 2024

Leading Off
The Mavericks (7-2-3, 1-1-1) are already in their final homestand of the season as they take on North Dakota (4-5-4, 0-1-2) Thursday at 6 p.m. on Senior Day, before taking on St. Thomas (4-6-2, 0-2-1) in the home finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Quick Kicks
• Omaha won its only match last week with a 1-0 shutout at South Dakota. The win was the seventh of the season for the Mavericks, tying the team's 2023-24 win total with five games left to play.
• This shutout marked Omaha's sixth of the season, giving the team a .500 shutout percentage.
• Omaha's elite defense was on full display in the victory as they limited the Coyotes to just two shots on goal, the fewest the team has allowed since last year's conference championship match against South Dakota State (2). Two games before that, the Mavericks held South Dakota to only one shot on goal in the opening round of the tournament.
• Scoring the one and only goal for Omaha on Thursday was Alyssa Kellar, who tied her goal total from last year with five. She is now tied for second in the league in goals, tied for the league lead in game-winning goals (three), and tied for fourth in points (11).
• With five games to go, the Mavericks are within reach of setting the program's Division I record for wins in a single season, trailing only the 2020 team (8-5-5) and 2021 team (9-8-2).
• Once Grace Ostergaard takes the field on Thursday, she will officially set the Division I program record in matches started with 91. With two more starts after that, she will also set the all-time program record with 93 starts.
• This Thursday is also Senior Day at Caniglia Field, with Omaha's nine seniors all set to be honored: Cece Behrens, Reagan Bourgeois, Grace Crockett, Emilie Erland, Marissa Gohr, Meg Nemnich, Grace Ostergaard, Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen, and Regan Zimmers.

Scouting the North Dakota Fighting Hawks
One of just three teams in the league without a win in conference play, North Dakota enters the week at 4-5-4 overall and 0-1-2 in league play. Last week, the Fighting Hawks were topped 2-1 by North Dakota State, extending the team's winless streak to five matches. Despite this, UND remains the second highest scoring team in the league with 1.769 goals per game.

Fighting Hawks to Watch
Five Fighting Hawks have scored at least three goals on the season, led by Milan Cordone and Jessica Machovec with four each. Cordone has also notched two assists to lead the team with 10 points.

Likewise, UND has four players with at least three assists, paced by Julia Briggs with four, tying her for fourth in the league. Meanwhile, Kaylie Fowler is the only Fighting Hawk to have both three goals and three assists.

Earning the majority of time in goal for North Dakota is freshman Grace Miller with 12 starts and just under 900 minutes played. The rookie is second in the league with 54 saves and fifth with a .794 save percentage. She has not allowed a goal in five of her 12 outings.

Series History
Omaha has the all-time edge over North Dakota with a 20-5-4 record, including an 8-1-4 record in the Division I era. That loss came all the way back in 2019, with the Mavericks going 5-0-1 since then, including last year's 2-0 shutout.

Scouting the St. Thomas Tommies
Like UND, St. Thomas is still looking for its first Summit League victory of the season as they come to town in eighth place with a 4-5-2 overall record and a 0-1-1 conference mark. After tying South Dakota 0-0 and falling to Oral Roberts 1-0 last week, the Tommies have gone winless in their last four and will play Denver on Thursday before arriving in Omaha. As a team, UST is sixth in the league in scoring (1.33 goals per game) and eighth in defense (1.67 goals allowed).

Tommies to Watch
Senior forward Lexi Huber has been UST's top all-around player this year, scoring five of the team's 16 goals and totaling 11 points, both of which rank in the top four in the league.

Along with Huber, Abby Brantner and Tatum Trettel are the only other Tommies with multiple goals at two each. Branter also leads the team in minutes played with 958.

Senior goalkeeper has started 10 of St. Thomas' 12 matches, making 36 saves and allowing 17 goals for a .679 save percentage and 1.72 GAA. She does, however, have four shutouts under her belt this year, including a four-save performance against South Dakota last week.

Series History
The Mavericks are 3-0 in their short history against the Tommies. Last year, Omaha routed St. Thomas 4-0 at home, with Alyssa Kellar scoring two goals and Cece Behrens with one, while Mia Reedtz made six saves in goal.
