OMAHA, Neb. - In their lone preseason exhibition of the year, the Mavericks hit triple digits against York tonight as they took the game 101-62.
Leaders for Omaha
12 Mavericks scored a point tonight, led by
Marquel Sutton who put up 27 after shooting 10-for-15 overall and 4-for-6 on threes.
JJ White and
Grant Stubblefield were also in double figures with 11 points each. On defense, newcomers
Joshua Streit and
Khamani Cooper led the way, with the NDSU transfer pulling down seven boards and blocking two shots, while the former JUCO standout totaled five steals. Fellow newcomer
Lance Waddles also had a strong debut, leading the team with six assists.
Team Stats
Omaha ended the night shooting 52.2% (36-for-69) from the field and 37.5% (12-for-32) from behind the arc, easily outpacing the Panthers who shot 31.3% (20f-for-64) and 23.8% (5-for-21).
Bolstering Omaha's scoring was an impressive 37 points off turnovers. Conversely, York totaled just six points off turnovers
Inside the First Half
After York scored two of the first three buckets to begin the night with a 4-2 lead, it was all Omaha for the rest of the half as the Mavericks ended up taking a 58-36 lead into halftime. Sutton led the charge with 14 points, making his first three attempts from behind the arc before the clock even hit 15. The deep ball paid off for Omaha throughout the half as the team shot 9-for-19 on threes, with White also making multiple (2-for-2).
Overall nine Mavericks would record a point in the first half, with a mix of veterans and newcomers alike contributing. Seeing the court for the first time in an Omaha uniform,
Kamryn Thomas, Streit, Waddles, Cooper, and
Pablo Soumare combined to shoot 8-for-15 with 23 points. Cooper also led the way with three steals, taking one all the way for his second bucket at 7:33.
Inside the Second Half
The Mavericks continued to capitalize on turnovers over the final 20, with steals from Cooper, Thomas, and White all directly leading to an Omaha dunk. Sutton remained hot as he added another 13 points (91-55 with 6:21 to go). Likewise, White joined him as the second Maverick to cross into double figures when he nailed a floater at 14:04, followed by Stubblefield who made a layup with just over 10 minutes left.
With the game winding down, Omaha continued to steadily continue its march towards 100 points, entering the final 10 minutes with 82 on the board. Dunks from
Ja'Sean Glover and Sutton would get the Mavericks to 89, before another three from Osburn with 6:32 remaining got them to 91. After
Valentino Simon made it 99-60 with 2:30 to play, it came down to
Sebastian Perry with 56 seconds left to push Omaha over the top with a jumper in the paint.
Game Notes
- Were this an official game, Omaha's 22 assists and 12 steals would both top the team's totals from every single game last year.
- Last year, the Mavericks only reached 100 points once, doing so in an official game coincidentally against York on November 27 in which they won 104-68.
