Omaha Baseball Skipper Evan Porter Inks Extension

May 23, 2023

One of the most decorated players in Omaha history and 2018 UNO Hall of Fame Class inductee, Evan Porter, has signed a multi-year contract extension to remain Head Coach of the Maverick baseball program announced today by Vice Chancellor / Director of Athletics, Adrian Dowell.

"We are excited to have Coach Porter continue as the leader of our baseball program," Dowell said.  "Under his direction, Maverick baseball has experienced elevated success having competed in two of the past three Summit League championship games including capturing the 2019 conference titles en route to the program's first ever NCAA Tournament appearance at the Division I level."

Porter, a 2009 alumnus of UNO, former professional baseball player, and MLB draft pick, is in his seventh year as head coach of the Mavericks. The Omaha product spent the 2013-16 seasons as Omaha's assistant coach before taking over.

"As one of the most successful student-athletes to compete at UNO, Coach Porter is uniquely qualified to understand the high ceiling for our program and we are confident in his ability to position Maverick baseball for future, sustainable success."

"I'm honored to continue to lead our baseball program, there's no place I'd rather be coaching than my alma mater and hometown," Porter said. "I'm grateful to Chancellor Li and Adrian for their relentless support and leadership, there's never been a better time to be a Maverick. I cherish this baseball program and will continue to give our amazing student athletes everything I've got."

This season, he has led the Mavericks to a 3-2 record against in-state opponents. Omaha took the season series from Nebraska and split with Creighton. Between the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, Omaha has gone 4-3 against the Huskers and 3-1 versus the Bluejays. Dating back to the 2020 season, Porter's Mavericks have captured 27 wins against Power Five schools.

Porter has also overseen the development of Mike Boeve, turning him into a top-10 hitter in the NCAA and a prominent MLB draft prospect.

In 2022, the Mavericks continued to find success under Porter, reaching the Summit League postseason for the third season in a row after ending the regular season 12-12 in the conference. Fourth-seeded Omaha faced top-seeded North Dakota State twice in the tournament, first in the opening round and later in the elimination game, winning both contests and making it all the way to the finals. On an individual level, he coached Caleb Riedel to the lowest earned run average in the NCAA last year at 1.49.

In just his third season at the helm, Porter led his team to the first NCAA Division I Baseball Regional berth in program history after the Mavericks captured the 2019 Summit League Regular Season and Tournament titles. Porter was also named Summit League Coach of the Year and saw eight of his players earn All-Summit honors. His team finished 31-24-1 and more than doubled their wins from the previous season en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance in the Los Angeles Regional against No. 1 UCLA.

Rounding out his third season, The Mavericks finished with a .984 fielding percentage, which was the top mark in the country. The team also saw Payton Kinney earn Summit League Pitcher of the Year, Tournament MVP, and Rawlings/ABCA All-America Third Team honors.

Since joining the coaching staff back in 2013, two of his former players have been drafted and three have made minor league professional appearances.

Porter was a four-year starter at shortstop from 2005-09 and a two-time All-American for Omaha. He was also a three-time All-Region selection from 2007-09, earning awards from Daktronics and Rawlings/ABCA. Additionally, Porter was a two-time All-NCC pick (2007-08) and was first-team All-MIAA in 2009.

Porter's name can be found throughout the Omaha record books as he remains the program's all-time leader in games played (239), at-bats (869), hits (323), doubles (75), home runs (43), runs batted in (249) and total bases (527). His 97 hits recorded as a senior were a Mavericks single-season record that still stands, and his 23 doubles and 76 RBI's in his junior year both rank second on the single-season charts.

A member of the UNO squad that earned a berth to the 2007 NCAA Division II College World Series, Porter was part of two Maverick teams (2006, 2008) that set a school record with 45 wins. During his time, the Mavericks made four straight NCAA regional appearances and won the 2008 NCC championship.
