Box Score Sioux Falls, S.D.—The No. 10 seeded Omaha Mavericks upset the No. 7 Kansas City Roos in the opening round of the Summit League Men's Basketball Championships on Friday, Mar. 3.
The Mavericks defeated the Roos by a score of 73-61 on Friday night at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls. Omaha was led by a 21-point performance from
Frankie Fidler.
Omaha Leaders
Fidler was 7-11 from the field, including 2-4 from three-point range.
Dylan Brougham recorded a career-high 15 points, using two dunks and nine made free throws.
Marquel Sutton also scored 15, banking-in a late three that helped the Mavericks secure the victory. Sutton and
Luke Jungers led the team with six rebounds apiece. Brougham and
Jaeden Marshall collected five boards each. Marshall tallied 13 points, including two three-point buckets.
Kansas City Leaders
Tyler Andrews recorded a double-double in the loss. Andrews scored a team-high 20 points and picked up 11 rebounds. He shot 50 percent from the field and hit three from deep. RayQuandis Mitchell scored 13 points, rounding out the Roos' double-digit scorers. Mitchell entered Friday's contest averaging 17.4 ppg.
Team Stats
The Mavericks averaged 47.2 percent from the field, while the Roos shot 35 percent. Omaha also had the edge from the arc, shooting 40 percent to Kansas City's 34.5 percent.
The Roos had the slight advantage on the glass, out rebounding the Mavericks 36-33. Omaha led in points off turnovers (10-0), points in the paint (34-18), fast break points (11-0), and bench points (18-7).
Inside the First Half
The Mavericks and Roos began the game with a physical, low-scoring ten minutes. A three-pointer from
Jaeden Marshall at 10:02 kickstarted the Omaha offense, which scored 15 points over the next 4:25. The Maverick defense stifled the Roos offense, which scored just one point during that stretch.
A late three from Marshall and another from
Luke Jungers with :35 seconds remaining put the Mavericks up by 25, their largest lead of the game. Those threes capped an 11-0 scoring run over 2:48. Kansas City added a late bucket, but the Mavericks would head into the locker room up 45-22.
Inside the Second Half
Kansas City found success from the arc in the second half, using timely threes to cut the Omaha lead to 13.
Omaha weathered the storm, battling their way to the free throw line where they went 15-22. A three pointer from
Marquel Sutton at 4:46 helped seal the win with the Mavericks up 69-49.
