The Omaha Track & Field team had a quick trip to Vermillion for the USD Alumni Meet. The Mavericks sprinters continued to have strong performances with senior
Carrie Simonson shaving an additional .02 off her lifetime best that she set a week ago in Minnesota. Her time of 7.70 was good for 4th place. Freshman
Tania Gleason came away with the 2nd fastest 60m of her career with a time of 8.02 and junior
Nina Cuevas ran her first race since May with a time of 8.05.
With the majority of the long distance crew taking the weekend off with some well deserved recovery, the Mavericks longest race of the day came in the 800m where
Gwen Steffen finished 7th in a time of 2:21.19.
The last event on the track was the infrequently run 4x200m. The team of
Tania Gleason,
Vanessa Gunderson, Bella Fleming and
Carrie Simonson finished 4th with a time of 1:46.02 which was three and a half seconds fastest than their time last year.
In the field events,
Kaitlin Hellbusch tied for 4th in the high jump with a height of 5'2.25". In the weight throw,
Mary Fennessy was just 4 inches shy of her PR to finish 5th with a distance of 53'5". In the last Maverick event of the day,
Emma Klein jumped 37'5.25 for 8th place.
On Friday evening,
Taylor Ramaekers competed at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational pentathlon in Lincoln. She finished the meet with season bests in each of the 5 events (60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and the 800m).
"I was very happy for Carrie, I know she has been working extremely hard and it's paying off. There's a lot of other people who are close, but they just need that last little push to get them to where they want to be. We have a big meet this next weekend so everyone needs to make sure they're going to prepare to the best of their ability."
