Quick Hits
- Facing two of their toughest opponents of the season, the Mavericks managed to hold their own for a while in two hard-fought losses last week to Big 12 powerhouse TCU and reigning NIT Champion North Texas.
- The big story in both losses was Omaha's performance in the second half. At TCU, the Mavericks entered the final 20 minutes down by just 10. Though the Horned Frogs scored 12 unanswered over the first five minutes, Omaha settled in and matched them point for point over the final 15 minutes, even outscoring them 13-8 in the last five minutes. Then, against UNT, after entering the half trailing by 16, the Mavericks held a 38-33 scoring advantage in the second half.
- Grant Stubblefield was a major part of Omaha's second-half at North Texas, having his best game yet by topping double-digits for the first time with 11 points and shooting 4-for-6, including 2-for-3 from behind the arc. All 19 of his minutes in that game came in the second half as well.
- Through the first week of the season, Frankie Fidler was Omaha's top scorer and rebounder with 38 points (12.7 ppg) and 14 boards (4.7 rpg). He is also tops on the team with four 3-PT FGs.
- Nick Davis continues to impress in his first season with Omaha and at the Division I level, slotting in at second on the team with 34 points (11.3 ppg) and 12 rebounds (4.0 rpg). His .538 FG% (14-for-26) is also the best on the team among players with at least 20 field goals attempted.
- Jaeden Marshall and Marquel Sutton have also been among the Mavericks' top scorers so far. Sutton led Omaha on Saturday with 15 points (5-for-11) to increase his ppg to 10.7. As for Marshall, he has had back-to-back games with 10 points, shooting 5-for-14 (.357) in that span.
- Omaha has used the same starting 5 in all 3 games: Fidler, Davis, Sutton, Marshall, and Biko Johnson
- Fidler was Omaha's lone All-Summit honoree last season, earning an Honorable Mention. He led Omaha in scoring (14.7 ppg), rebounding (5.8 rpg), steals (1.2 spg), and free throw percentage (.887), with his FT% in particular ranking in the NCAA's top-25 for most of the season.
- Stubblefield, Bryant, Davis, and Johnson are Omaha's top newcomers coming into this season. Stubblefield was named 6A Player of the Year and First Team All-State while at Blue Valley Northwest and Bryant was named the Austin Area Player of the Year at Cedar Ridge. Johnson is coming off his second season at Western Nebraska CC where he was named All-Conference and All-Nebraska, while Davis is fresh off winning GAC Defensive Player of the Year and a trip to the Sweet 16 of the Division II NCAA Tournament with Southern Nazarene.
- Head Coach Chris Crutchfield has a 20-33 overall record. It marks his third season as a head coach and second with the Mavericks.
