The day started off with a bang with
Carrie Simonson and
Tania Gleason both qualifying for the final in the 60m. Gleason ran a lifetime best of 7.92, dipping below 8 seconds for the first time and shaving .11 off her previous fastest. In the next heat, Simonson exploded from the starting blocks and sprinted the length of the track to cross the finish line in first. Her time of 7.72 was the fastest of her career and jumped her to number six all-time in school history. Later in the day, Simonson came back to finish 5th while Gleason crossed the line in 8th.
Gleason would run again later on to once again finish 8th in the 200m.
Macy Persinger and
Vanessa Gunderson finished the 200m races with lifetime bests each.
In the 2nd to last event of the day, a trio of Mavericks had great performances in the 3000m.
Maret Elgren ran a personal record time of 10:47.23. Kamry Ensley and Lauren Metzger ran together for the entirety of the race before Ensley pulled ahead on the final lap to finish 3rd overall with a time of 10:09.88. Metzger crossed the line just behind in 4th in 10:10.33. Her time lands her at number seven all-time in school history which sits just behind Ensley's number five time, set last week at Iowa State.
Other PR's from the day included Maddie Yardley in the 800m and Liv Steffen in the 400m. With a month to go before the indoor Summit Championships, Simonson is ranked 5th in the 60m,
Emma Klein is 6th in the triple jump and Ensley and Metzger are 7th and 8th, respectively, in the 3000m.
"You're in select company when you enter the top 10 list. The fact that we've already had a few new entries this year on top of the ones who have improved their ranking is a good sign," head coach
Chris Richardson said. "There's still a lot of work to do in other areas, but we're moving in the right direction. Now that we have three meets and a lot of marks under their belt's, it's time for them to reflect on what things they're doing well and what things can be better. Focus on the good and learn from the bad. With the indoor championships a month away, the opportunities to "get it next time" are quickly diminishing."
