The Mavericks women's tennis team fall season is officially underway after wrapping up the weekend at the Drake Invitational.
"The drake invite was a good start to the year," Omaha head coach
Adam Summitt said. "Usually in years past we have struggled here, I think because it's the first event of the year. However, this year was a bit different for us. Day 1, we competed really well and had the results to show for it."
The Mavericks got a good look at what they have for the season moving forward which included freshman
Zoe Adkins. Adkins finished 6-1 overall for the tournament. 4-0 in doubles and 2-1 in singles and finished 3rd in B flight for the tournament. The doubles team of Adkins and junior
Addison Miller finished first in B flight for doubles with an 8-5 victory over North Dakota.
"Adkins played great, for a freshman," Summitt said. "She looked composed and professional the whole event. VanPelt played above her level from last year and showed solid improvement within her game."
Another highlight of the Drake tournament was graduate transfer
Jessica Aragon. The Plano, Texas native went 3-4 over the weekend. 1-2 in singles and 2-2 in doubles.
"Aragon went toe-to-toe with other teams probable number one or number two players. She will only get better after not playing a true collegiate competitive match since January 2021," Summitt said.
Omaha gets right back to work this next week as they head to Cancun, Mexico for the Cancun College Cup, September 14-17.
