ST. PAUL, Minn. – Omaha got off to a quick start after a weather delay, then did little after that.
The Mavericks (24-27) dropped the opener of their final Summit League series of the regular season to St. Thomas (14-29) 6-4 Thursday at Koch Diamond, giving up six straight runs after grabbing a 4-0 lead.
Omaha did all of its offensive damage in the third inning.
Mike Boeve opened the scoring for the Mavericks when he extended his hitting streak to 27 games with an RBI single to right field. An error by the Tommies accounted for the second run, then
Drew Hmielewski doubled in Boeve to make it 3-0 early.
A bases-loaded walk capped a big Omaha third, but the Mavericks managed only five hits in the game.
St. Thomas, meanwhile, amassed 15. The Tommies didn't score against starter
Caleb Riedel or reliever
Joey Machado, who entered after the two-hour weather delay, but found success against the bullpen.
Bolstered by a three-run homer from Brigs Richartz, UST scored five runs in the fifth off
Jarrett Blunt. The Tommies added an insurance run in the seventh to cap their second win over Omaha this season.
The loss all but secured the No. 4 seed for the Mavericks in the upcoming Summit League tournament in Tulsa, Okla. They entered the weekend unable to climb to higher than third in the final league standings.
Omaha and UST play in St. Paul on Friday before wrapping up the series in Miesville, Minn., Saturday.
