UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. – Omaha was inching closer to a fifth win against a Big Ten opponent Friday.
Penn State, however, scored unearned runs in the seventh and eighth innings to edge the Mavericks 8-7.
Omaha (19-20), now 4-4 against Big Ten foes, used a six-run fifth to take a 7-5 lead over the Nittany Lions (19-21). Two-run singles by
Eddie Satisky and
Harrison Denk highlighted the offensive outburst.
Penn State got a run back in the bottom of that inning and capitalized on throwing errors in the decisive frames to pull out its fourth win in its last five games, even though it was outhit by the Mavericks 10-9.
Brady Posch started for Omaha, which rested usual Friday starter
Caleb Riedel, but he left with the Nittany Lions threatening in the second while the score was 1-1.
Easton Smith escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam that inning and tossed a scoreless third before Penn State scored four off him in the fourth.
The Mavericks responded with their big fifth, which began with a single that extended
Mike Boeve's hitting streak to 15 games.
Eduardo Rosario singled him in soon after to start the run-scoring flurry.
Tyler Mattingley (1-1) suffered the loss, although he didn't allow an earned run in three innings of work.
