Mavericks Drop Another Close One at Penn St.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. – For the second straight night, a late run decided the game.

Omaha (19-21) rallied from a three-run deficit to tie Penn State in the sixth inning of their second matchup in a weekend series, only to have the Nittany Lions score in the seventh to pull out a 4-3 win.

The Mavericks, who lost 8-7 in Friday's opener at Medlar Field, fell behind 3-0 when Penn State got three runs off starter Mark Timmins with three singles that were aided by an errant pickoff attempt.

Omaha got the runs back in the sixth when Will Hanafan's bases-loaded infield hit preceded a two-run single by Jack Lombardi that evened the score. Hanafan was then caught in a rundown near the plate.

The was the best chance to the Mavericks to grab the lead. Jay Harry's two-out single through the right side of the infield off Joey Machado (4-3) brought in Derek Cease with winning run for PSU (20-21).

Omaha's Mike Boeve singled in the game to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

The two teams wrap up their nonconference series on Sunday at 10 a.m.
