When
Harrison Kreiling received a text from Omaha coach
Evan Porter Monday informing him that he'd be starting for the Mavericks Tuesday against Kansas, the reliever assumed he be used as an opener.
After all, his recent three-inning stint at Western Illinois was his longest appearance since age 13.
But Kreiling struck out the side to open the game, and then posted a quick 1-2-3 inning in the second.
Later into the night, he was carrying a one-hit shut out into the seventh inning of Omaha's 9-0 win over the Jayhawks at Tal Anderson Field. Kreiling, who faced the minimum through six, fanned nine Jayhawks.
"I didn't really know exactly what the plan was," he said. "I was just going to go out there and throw as hard as I could for however long I needed too. The fact that it ended up being six innings was awesome."
Kreiling (3-2) left after walking the bases loaded in the seventh. But prior to that, he was blowing through the Kansas lineup. He allowed only one hit – a leadoff single by Ryan Callahan in the third – but quickly erased that base runner by getting a double play. He retired 11 straight batters in one stretch.
The Mavericks (20-21) gave him plenty of run support in beating the Jayhawks (18-27) for the second time in as many meetings. A one-out error in the second inning sparked a six-run outburst by Omaha.
Eddie Satisky, who finished with three of his team's 12 hits, and
Harrison Denk recorded consecutive doubles to put the Mavericks in front. One out later, Jack Lombardy added an RBI double. Then
Cam Frederick,
Devin Hurdle and
Eduardo Rosario each plated a run with a single to make it 6-0 early.
Omaha tacked on three more runs in the fifth to cap the scoring.
Tyler Mattingley pitched the Mavericks out of the bases-loaded jam in the seventh and then posted a 1-2-3 eighth.
Tanner Howe worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to finish the two-hit shutout.
Eight different Omaha players recorded at least one hit in the game. Hurdle drove in three runs. And
Mike Boeve doubled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
