MACOMB, Ill. – For the second straight day, a late-inning long ball helped Omaha to a road win.
Harrison Denk's two-out, two-run home run in the top of the eighth pushed the Mavericks (18-18) past Western Illinois (4-31) 6-5 Saturday in the second game of their Summit League series at Boyer Stadium.
Omaha, which rallied behind eighth-inning blasts from
Devin Hurdle and
Cam Frederick to win Friday's opening game, overcame an early 3-0 deficit to secure the series victory ahead of Sunday's 1 p.m. finale.
Adam Juran staked the Leathernecks to a three-run lead when he homered off
Charlie Bell with two on in the second inning. The Mavericks pulled even with a three-run third, capped by a Frederick solo shot.
The teams traded runs in the middle innings before Denk followed a Frederick single with a home run to left field, his first of the season. WIU got an unearned run in the ninth off winning pitcher
Wyatt Sellers, who improved to 3-0 after striking out three Leathernecks in his 2.1 innings of work in relief.
Frederick had a three-hit day to pace Omaha's offense as it improved to 9-5 in Summit League play.
Western Illinois reliever Kyle Rosenfeld (0-4) took the loss.
