MACOMB, Ill. – Omaha posted its first series sweep in Summit League play thanks to another late-innings surge that carried it past pesky Western Illinois Sunday afternoon at Afred Boyer Stadium.
Matt Baughn's first home run of the season broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning and sparked a surge of six unanswered runs by the Mavericks (19-18) in their 11-5 road victory over the Leathernecks (4-32).
Seven different players drove in runs as Omaha came from behind for the third straight day. After scoring twice in the top of the first inning, the Mavericks found themselves down 4-2 after three.
Omaha starter
Mark Timmins surrendered home runs in the second and third innings but left after five with the score even at 5-5. Baughn's solo shot in the seventh put the Mavericks up for good.
Will Hanafan followed with an RBI double later than inning and then scored on a
Jack Lombardi single.
Hanafan singled in another run during a two-run eighth, then
Harrison Denk homered for the second straight day in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Harrison Kreiling (2-2) earned the win in relief for Omaha.
The Mavericks improved to 10-5 in the Summit League following the sweep and sit one game behind first-place North Dakota State in the standings. Omaha doesn't play a conference game until May 6.
