LINCOLN, Neb. – Having already beaten Nebraska twice, Omaha was seeking to clinch the season series with the Huskers when the two met for the fourth and final time Wednesday night at Haymarket Park.
But its pitching and defense, combined with a resurgent NU offense, didn't give it much of a chance.
The Mavericks (19-19) walked eight Nebraska batters and hit four more with pitches, giving the Huskers 12 free bases to go along with their 10 hits. Additionally, two Omaha errors led to four unearned runs.
The result was a 14-3 defeat in a game that lasted only seven innings. Nebraska led 9-2 after three as Mavericks miscues prolonged early innings in which the Huskers capitalized on seemingly every mistake.
An errant throw by starting pitcher
Wyatt Sellers preceded a home run by NU's Max Anderson in the first. A low throw by shortstop
Devin Hurdle kept Omaha from limiting the damage in a decisive third.
The Mavericks held a brief 1-0 lead after Hurdle singled in
Cam Frederick in the top of the first. It was 3-2 following a
Jack Lombardi RBI single in the second, but the game got away from the Mavericks after.
Among the few bright spots, offensively, for Omaha were a solo home run by
Eduardo Rosario in the sixth and a third-inning double by
Mike Boeve that extended his current hitting streak to 14 games.
Defensively,
Will Hanafan made a leaping catch in center to rob NU's Leighton Banjoff of a homer.
Omaha and Nebraska each won two of their four games this year, with the home team winning every time. Unlike their final matchup, each of the first three contests came down to the game's final pitch.
