Omaha Athletics Announces Leadership Change for the Men's Basketball Program

Mar 6, 2022

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha's Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Adrian Dowell announced today the change in leadership for the Omaha men's basketball program.

"Earlier today I informed Derrin Hansen, the student-athletes, and coaches in our men's basketball program of my decision to make a change in leadership for the head coach position," said Dowell.

"I ask that the entire Maverick community join me in thanking Coach Hansen for his many contributions to Omaha Athletics and our university. In 17 years leading Omaha Men's Basketball, Coach Hansen represented UNO with class, impacted countless lives through his mentorship of student-athletes on and off the court, and successfully transitioned the program to the Division I level. We wish Derrin and his family nothing but the best in the future, and we are forever grateful for their impact on Omaha Athletics."

Hansen compiled a 253-260 career record with the Mavericks, which included an appearance in the CBI Tournament during the 2015-16 season. Hansen posted a 68-89 record in the Summit League and advanced to the conference tournament finals in 2016-17 and 2018-19. They finished 5-25 overall and 4-14 in league play this season.

"After a careful assessment of the program, I am confident that under new leadership, Omaha Basketball can achieve sustainable success at the top of our league, and we are committed to elevating the program's stature. We will immediately begin a nationwide search for the new head coach of Maverick Basketball."

Omaha will begin a national search for the next head men's basketball coach immediately.
