FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A week removed from a win over a ranked foe, Omaha was primed to test itself against another. And through three and a half innings, the Mavericks were in good shape at Arkansas.
The No. 10 Razorbacks hit three home runs, however, during a 12-run outburst in the fourth and fifth en route to a 15-3 win over Omaha Wednesday at Baum-Walker Stadium. The Mavericks didn't help themselves during those frames, walking five batters and hitting another while committing two errors.
"Baseball's a big momentum game, and there's usually one or two times within each game when you have a chance to stop it," Omaha coach
Evan Porter said. "We did not do that, and they kept going. They really capitalized on some walks and miscues we had, and then the game got away from us."
Jackson Gordon started for the Mavericks and pitched into the fourth. Arkansas scored a run against him in the first, but he struck out four batters and induced an inning-ending double play with two on in the third.
Omaha (2-7) pulled even in the top of the second when
Grant Goldston singled in
Noah Greise, who led off the inning with a hit.
Devin Hurdle then plated the go-ahead run in the fourth with an RBI groundout.
The 2-1 advantage didn't last long. Brady Slavens homered off Gordon (0-1) with one out in the fourth. The Razorbacks (5-2) took over after. Three walks and a two-run double later, they grabbed a 6-2 lead.
Arkansas then plated seven runs against the Maverick bullpen in the fifth to pull away. Michael Turner and Peyton Stovall each hit two-run homers. Lanzilli singled in a run. Another scored on a wild pitch.
Omaha added a run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk. The Razorbacks also scored twice that inning.
The Mavericks, paced by Goldston's 3-for-3 effort, tallied 10 hits in the game.
Mike Boeve went 2 for 4.
"I think our offense did well. We played one of the three facets of baseball," Porter said. "Our pitching and defense need to be better. There were some bright spots – with
Jackson Gordon,
Rece Snyder and
Wyatt Sellers. But we just need to pitch it better and pick it up behind our pitchers a lot better."
The Mavericks will meet Arkansas again later this month at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
Omaha plays at home for the first time Friday when it welcomes Valparaiso for a four-game series.
