Devin Hurdle and
Cam Frederick homered, and Hurdle and
Noah Greise each drove in three runs, as Omaha earned a doubleheader split with Valparaiso in its home opener at Tal Anderson Field Friday.
The Mavericks (3-8) bounced back from a 4-2 seven-inning loss in the opener to take the second game 9-2. Omaha raced to a 7-0 lead in the first three innings of the nightcap to snap a five-game losing streak.
Greise got the Mavericks going in the second game with a two-run double off losing pitcher Zach Fricke (0-1) in the first inning. Frederick made it 3-0 with a solo homer in the second inning. Then Hurdle added a three-run shot during a four-run third as Omaha built an insurmountable lead.
Maverick starter
Charlie Bell (2-1) struck out 11 in six innings of six-hit ball, allowing only one run. Omaha plate five runs off Fricke, the Beacons starter, then four off reliever Connor Lockwood right after.
The Mavericks grabbed an early lead in the opener when
Jack Lombardi tripled in a run in the second.
Valpo (4-3), however, got a two-run home run from Kaleb Hannahs in the third and consecutive RBI doubles from him and Kyle Schmack in fifth to go up 4-1. Omaha scored an unearned run in the fifth.
Trent Turzenski (2-1) pitched six innings for the Beacons to get the win while Bobby Nowak got a save.
Mark Timmins (0-1) allowed four runs on eight hits while fanning five over four innings for Omaha.
