Mavericks Set For Home Opener Against Wichita State

OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha softball hosts Wichita State Wednesday for its home opener at Connie Claussen Field. First pitch between the Mavericks and Shockers is set for 4 p.m. Omaha is coming off a 3-2 showing at the Spring Games and look to pick up another non-conference win before heading into Summit League Play.

  • The Mavericks posted an 11-7 record in the four opening tournaments. They earned big wins vs. Radford and Georgetown at the Spring Games.
  • Omaha's winning percentage through non-conference play is the best start to a season since 2014. The Mavericks opened that year 17-9. They currently sit at .611. The only other season since 2014 that the team was .500 or above was in 2020 when the team was 12-12 before COVID shutdown play.

  • As a team, Omaha is hitting .289 overall this season to rank fourth in the league. The Mavericks have the fourth most runs scored (64), the fourth most hits (135), third most doubles (27), and fourth most RBI (61).

Scouting Wichita State
The Shockers are 14-7 overall heading into the midweek match-up. They are currently on a three-game win streak after downing SEMO, Iowa, and Kansas over the weekend. Wichita State run-ruled SEMO and Iowa scoring 14 runs in each game. They scored another nine at Kansas in a 9-2 win. The Shockers were dubbed the American Athletic Conference's preseason favorite after capturing the league title last season.

Shockers to Watch
  • After 76 at-bats over 20 games started, Sydney McKinney leads the Shockers hitting .513. She has a team-leading 29 hits, which includes seven doubles, four triples, and seven homers. McKinney tallied 20 RBI and seven stolen bases over her appearances so far.
  • Caitlin Bingham has made the most starts in the circle at seven and appeared 11 times for Wichita State. She has a 4.06 ERA. Over 39.2 innings pitched, Bingham retired 21 batters and allows her opponents to hit .303 at the plate.

All-Time vs. the Shockers
The all-time series is tied 3-3. The teams met last season with the Shockers taking a 1-0 win over the Mavericks. White recorded two of Omaha's four hits. Sydney Nuismer logged six innings in the circle and retired two batters.
