Mavericks To Play In Michelle Short Memorial Classic

The Basics
The Mavericks travel to Arkansas for their third tournament of the season. Omaha will play in the Michelle Short Memorial Classic hosted by Central Arkansas. The schedule has been altered due to weather. Omaha will play two games Sunday vs. St. Louis and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Monday will see another pair of games vs. St. Louis and Central Arkansas.
 
Leading Off
  • The Mavericks won four straight games at the Incarnate Word Tournament last week to improve to 5-4 overall.
  • The weekend opened with a 1-0 shutout vs. Boise State. Kamryn Meyer gave up only one hit and retired a career-high 15 batters.
  • The Mavericks then downed Incarnate Word 4-0 and UTSA 5-0 for three straight shutouts.
  • Meyer punched her ticket for Pitcher of the Week with a no-hitter vs. UTSA. She also tallied 11 strikeouts.
  • The Mavericks closed the weekend with a 7-2 win vs. Incarnate Word. Omaha exploded for 12 hits highlighted by a two-run blast from Jamie White.
  • Omaha opened 2022 action at the UNI Dome Tournament finishing the five-game schedule 1-4. Omaha's first win of the season came against the Drake Bulldogs, 3-2.
  • Rachel Weber doubled in the sixth to plate the game winning run for the Mavericks. All four of Weber's hits in the tournament were doubles.
  • Kamryn Meyer earned the win in the circle. She finished 1-1 over two appearances and recorded 15 strikeouts over 12.2 innings of work.
  • In her career debuting weekend, Sophie Cerveny led Omaha at the plate. She hit .400 over the five games and tallied six hits.
  • The Mavericks were picked fourth in the 2022 Preseason Poll earlier this week behind South Dakota State, North Dakota State, and Kansas City.
  • White and Meyer were tabbed Preseason Players to Watch.
  • The Mavericks finished last season 20-28 overall and 12-11 in league play. Omaha earned the No. 2 seed in the league tournament and made their first appearance in the championship game in the DI era.
 
Scouting St. Louis
St. Louis is 1-4 to start the season. The Billikens opened 2022 action with an 8-1 win vs. Samford before dropping the next four to Southern Mississippi, Samford, and North Alabama. St. Louis was tabbed sixth in the A-10 preseason poll after posting a 19-27 overall and 10-12 record in league play last year.
 
Billikens to Watch
  • Gabbie Kowalik leads the Billikens hitting .533. She finished 8-for-15 with two double and two triples. Kowalik recorded three runs and four RBI over five games.
  • Taylor Hochman is the go-to pitcher in the circle. She's made two starts over three appearances with two complete games. Over 17 innings pitched, Hochman has a 2.88 ERA and six strikeouts.
 
Series History
This marks the first meeting between the Mavericks and Billikens.
 
Scouting Arkansas-Pine Bluff
The Golden Lions are 1-5 as 2022 spring action takes off. They dropped four straight to Northwestern State, UT Martin, Chattanooga, and Baylor before dominating Harris-Stowe State, 32-0. Pine Bluff was tabbed sixth in the SWAC Western Division preseason poll. The Lions finished 2-29 overall and 2-16 in conference action in 2021.
 
Golden Lions to Watch
  • Alyssa Wesley leads Pine Bluff at the plate hitting .333 over five games. She has three hits and three runs for the Lions. Wesley also leads the team with three stolen bases.
  • Kirsten Schmidt's 3.50 ERA leads the Lions. She is 0-2 in the circle and has 15 strikeouts on the year.
 
Series History
Omaha leads the all-time series 2-0 after earning two wins vs. Pine Bluff last season.
 
Scouting Central Arkansas
The Bears are 3-6 overall after two weekends of play. Central Arkansas went 1-4 opening weekend sneaking a 3-2 win over No. 14 LSU for its first win of the season. The Bears split last weekend taking wins over Georgia Tech and Mississippi State. The Bears finished last year 37-19 overall and 21-6 in league play. They were tabbed third in the ASUN preseason poll.
 
Bears to Watch
  • Tremere Harris is hitting .467 to lead the Bears at the plate. She has 14 hits, including one double and one triple. Harris has two RBI, five runs, and four stolen bases.
  • Kayla Beaver has appeared in the circle six times making four starts and tallying two complete games. She leads the Bears with a 4.46 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 26.2 innings pitched.
 
Series History
Central Arkansas earned a win last season to lead the all-time series 1-0 over Omaha.
