SAN JOSE, Calif. – Omaha exploded for 15 runs against San Jose State in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Excite Ballpark. It would've liked to have saved just one of them for the nightcap.
The Mavericks (1-2) split the twin bill, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Spartans (2-1) after blasting them 15-0 earlier in the day. Nineteen of Omaha's 23 hits on Saturday came during its one-sided victory.
Five different Mavericks posted multi-hit games in the opener, led by
Mike Boeve's 4-for-4 performance.
Eddie Satisky,
Jack Lombardi and
Devin Hurdle each tallied three hits. Lombardi had a three-run homer.
Omaha chased SJSU starter Arron Eden in the second inning, scoring four runs on six hits and two walks.
Eduardo Rosario singled in Boeve in the first to start the onslaught. He was one of five Mavericks to drive in multiple runs.
Cam Frederick, Boeve and Hurdle each plated a pair of runs in the victory.
Charlie Bell excelled in his Omaha debut, limiting San Jose State to a hit and a walk in five innings of work. He combined with
Tanner Howe and
Cooper Prosoki on a three-hit shutout in the victory.
The Mavericks fell behind 4-0 in the nightcap before rallying to within a run late. SJSU reliever Joey Cammarata walked in a run in the sixth and the seventh, then Hurdle plated another on a groundout.
The Spartans added an insurance run in the eighth before
Drew Hmielewski hit a solo home for Omaha in the ninth. SJSU reliever Brady Hill struck out three Mavericks in a row after that to seal the win.
Maverick starter
Caleb Riedel pitched into the fourth and took the loss despite allowing only one earned run. San Jose State starter Micky Thompson struck out eight batters in five innings to pick up the win.
