SAN JOSE, Calif. – Omaha's late rally at Excite Ballpark came up short on Sunday.
The Mavericks scored five runs over the final three innings of their 14-11 loss to San Jose State in the finale of their four-game season-opening series. Omaha (1-3) stranded 16 runners against the Spartans.
Mike Boeve and
Noah Greise each had three hits, and
Devin Hurdle drove in four runs for the Mavericks, who outscored San Jose State (3-1) 39-33 in the series thanks to their 15-0 blowout win on Saturday.
Omaha took a short-lived 2-0 lead on Sunday after SJSU starter Jonathan Clark struggled with his control. The right-hander hit two batters and walked to more before exiting after 2/3 of an inning.
The Spartans got the runs back off Mavericks starter
Joey Machado in the bottom half, then broke the game open by manufacturing three consecutive four-run innings against the Omaha bullpen midgame.
Charles McAdoo hit a grand slam for San Jose State in the fifth inning, and Hunter Dorraugh added a three-run shot in the sixth to push the lead to 14-6. Boeve had an inside-the-park homer for Omaha in the sixth. He also scored runs in the seventh and ninth, crossing the plate five times in all in the game.
Cade Van Allen picked up the win for SJSU.
Jarrett Blunt suffered the loss for the Mavericks.
