Mavericks Fall on Opening Day in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Omaha bounced back from a first-pitch homer in the first inning of its season.

It couldn't, however, keep pace with San Jose State in an opening slugfest Friday at Excite Park.

Shortstop Theo Hardy's tie-breaking three-run triple in the bottom of the fourth inning sparked the Spartans (1-0) to a 14-9 victory over the Mavericks (0-1) in a high-scoring affair to open the 2022 slate.

San Jose State plated eight consecutive runs in the middle innings after designated hitter Eduardo Rosario staked Omaha to a 4-2 lead with a three-run blast off starter Ethan Ross in the top of the third.

Catcher Omar Gastelum drove in four runs to help the Spartans spoil a four-hit day by Maverick right fielder Grant Goldston. Third baseman Mike Boeve had two hits and scored three times for Omaha.

Shortstop Devin hit a two-run homer in the sixth to pull the Mavericks within 10-6 after San Jose State had turned a two-run deficit into a 10-4 advantage. The Spartans added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to pad their advantage. They outhit Omaha 12-10, with Hunter Dorraugh tallying three of the hits.

Robert Hamchuk put San Jose State up early when he homered on the first pitch of the game by Maverick starter Mark Timmins, who gave up four runs on four hits and three walks in 2.1 innings.

Harrison Kreiling (0-1) suffered the loss for Omaha after allowing four runs in the fourth. The Mavericks used six pitchers in all on opening day. Only Drew Hmielewski, who faced one batter, didn't allow a run.

Corey Sanchez (1-0) earned the win in relief for San Jose State, although he surrendered a pair of runs.

Friday's game was the opener of a four-game series. The teams play twice Saturday and once Sunday.
