Omaha Heads South To Incarnate Word Tournament

The Basics
Omaha softball heads south to San Antonio, Texas to take on three opponents in a four-game slate at the Incarnate Word Tournament. The Mavericks will play two on Friday vs. Boise State and Incarnate Word. Action continues Saturday with a single game vs. UTSA. The tournament then wraps Sunday afternoon with another game vs. the host.
 
Leading Off
  • Omaha opened 2022 action last weekend at the UNI Dome Tournament finishing the five-game schedule 1-4. Omaha's first win of the season came against the Drake Bulldogs, 3-2.
  • Rachel Weber doubled in the sixth to plate the game winning run for the Mavericks. All four of Weber's hits in the tournament were doubles.
  • Kamryn Meyer earned the win in the circle. She finished 1-1 over two appearances and recorded 15 strikeouts over 12.2 innings of work.
  • In her career debuting weekend, Sophie Cerveny led Omaha at the plate. She hit .400 over the five games and tallied six hits.
  • The Mavericks were picked fourth in the 2022 Preseason Poll earlier this week behind South Dakota State, North Dakota State, and Kansas City.
  • Jamie White and Kamryn Meyer were tabbed Preseason Players to Watch.
  • White enters her fourth season with the Mavericks after being named to the 2021 All-Summit First Team last year. She started all 48 games at third base for Omaha last season. White finished the 2021 season hitting .269 with 35 hits, including four doubles and five homers. She also tallied 17 runs and 24 RBI.
  • She posted five multi-hit games last season, which included a career-high four hits at Kansas City. She also went on a nine-game hitting streak near the end of the regular season. White nearly sparked the upset vs. SDSU in the championship game with a two-run blast to bring Omaha back within two of the Jackrabbits.
  • Meyer returns for her junior campaign in the circle. She was named to the 2021 All-Summit Second Team and earned two Pitcher of the Week honors last season. She made 28 appearances and 18 starts in 2021. She finished with 10-8 record and a 3.18 ERA.
  • Meyer retired 166 batters over 127.2 innings of work, recorded five shutouts, and pitched a no-hitter. Her no hitter came against North Dakota in the Summit League Tournament. She struck out eight batters in the contest. She posted a career-high 13 batters vs. North Dakota earlier in the regular season.
  • The Mavericks finished last season 20-28 overall and 12-11 in league play. Omaha earned the No. 2 seed in the league tournament and made their first appearance in the championship game in the DI era.
 
Scouting Boise State
Boise State is off to its best start in program history after winning five straight in the opening weekend of action. The Broncos downed Cal Poly (8-7), Middle Tennessee (4-0, 8-1), and Stanford (7-3). Boise State was tabbed third in the Mountain West Preseason Poll after finishing 20-25 overall and 11-13 in the conference last season.
 
Broncos to Watch
  • Alycia Flores led the Broncos at the plate over their first five games. She hit .529 with nine hits, including two doubles and two homers. She tallied five RBI and eight runs.
  • Taylor Caudill leads Boise State with a 1.11 ERA over three appearances. She retired 22 batters over 12.2 innings of work and went 2-0 in the circle.
  •  Hannah Bailey is also a force for the Broncos in the circle. She posted a 1.31 ERA over two complete games and three appearances. She recorded 13 strikeouts and went 2-0.
 
Series History
This marks the first meeting between the Mavericks and Broncos.
 
Scouting Incarnate Word
The Cardinals are 3-3 following the first week of action. They earned wins against Green Bay (9-4, 4-2) and Prairie View A&M (19-6). Incarnate Word was selected fifth in the Stoutland Preseason Poll earlier this year. They finished 16-27 overall last year and 9-18 in the conference.
 
Cardinals to Watch
  • Ryleigh Mata leads the Cardinals hitting .533 over five games played. She has eight hits, two RBI, and five runs so far this season.
  • In the circle, Ashley Trapp posts a 1.34 ERA and a 1-1 record over four appearances for Incarnate Word. Trapp has tallied 25 strikeouts over 15.2 innings of work.
 
Series History
Omaha leads the all-time series 1-0. The teams first met in the 2001 season when the Mavericks earned a 6-3 win.
 
Scouting UTSA
The Roadrunners are 1-5 to start 2022 play. They dropped their first five games of the year before rebounding earlier this week vs. Green Bay with a 5-0 win. Last season, UTSA finished 15-31 overall and 8-12 in C-USA action.
 
Roadrunners to Watch
  • Erykah Guerrero leads UTSA hitting .500 over four games played. She has five hits, including a homer, two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Marena Estell leads the Roadrunners in the circle with a 4.80 ERA over four appearances. She is 1-3 overall and recorded 10 strikeouts over 15.0 innings of work.
 
Series History
Omaha holds a 2-0 edge over UTSA. The team met twice in 2014.
