The Omaha Mavericks Indoor Track & Field season has officially begun as the Mavericks competed in their first meet of the season yesterday at the SDSU Holiday Invite and Multi in Brookings, South Dakota.
Rookie Mavericks
Addison Webster,
Emma Klein and
Tania Gleason showed yesterday at the meet. Webster finished 8th in the hurdles with a time of 9.34 and Klein leaped to a 4th place finish in triple jump with a distance of 36'5.5". Gleason came out blazing in the 200m with 25.74 and a 4th place finish.
Senior sprinter
Carrie Simonson finished 7th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.92 in the preliminary round while junior jumper
Kaitlin Hellbusch tied for 5th in the high jump with a height of 5'3".
Macy Persinger and
Vanessa Gunderson finished 7th and 8th in the rarely run 300m with times of 43.67 and 43.73 respectively.
The highlight of the day came from sophomore thrower
Mary Fennessy who threw a lifetime best of 53'7.75" in the weight throw which moves her up to the fourth best throw in school history.
"We have been practicing for the past two and a half months so this meet was an opportunity for our team to get out and compete," Omaha head coach
Chris Richardson said. "For many, the first competition will always being out the nerves so we need to learn how to use that nervous energy to our advantage instead of having it overwhelm us. I was very happy with how we responded."
The Mavericks will remain idle until January 13th and 14th when they head to Lincoln to compete in the Graduate Classic at the University of Nebraska.
