Box Score IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Hawkeyes came out on top over the Mavericks in Monday night's contest. Behind a 30-point performance from Kris Murray, Iowa won, 100-64.
Jaeden Marshall led Omaha with nine points.
The Mavericks fall to 1-4 on the year.
Omaha Leaders
Marshall recorded a team-leading nine points, while
Akol Arop added eight in his season-debut.
Marquel Sutton and
Dylan Brougham each tallied five rebounds, while
La'Mel Robinson recorded a team-best four assists.
Brougham also set a Division I single-game record with seven blocks.
Iowa Leaders
Murray led all-scorers with 30 points on 13-of-17 from the field. He added seven boards and two blocks. Patrick McCaffrey also hit double-digits with 16 points on 4-of-8 from the field. He finished 7-of-7 at the foul line.
Connor McCaffery scored 12 points off the bench and was the final Hawkeye in double-figures.
Team Stats
Omaha shot 44.4 percent from the field, but it wasn't enough to match Iowa's 55.4 percent Monday night. The Hawkeyes also connected from 12-of-26 from deep, while the Mavericks only sunk three.
Both team's attacked the paint scoring 40 each inside. Omaha's bench edged Iowa, 34-31, while the Hawkeyes led on fast break, second chance, and points off turnovers.
Inside the First Half
Omaha tallied the first points Monday at the hands of Brougham in the paint. P. McCaffrey tied the game with 18:21 on a pair from the foul line, while a three-pointer from Murray at the 17:13 mark captured a permanent lead for Iowa. The Mavericks kept it a one possession game for much of the next five minutes and got within one point twice with the help of Robinson and
Kennedy Brown off the bench.
Murray scored seven straight points to help Iowa pull away ahead of the 12-minute media timeout. Murray's spark helped Iowa to an 18-3 run to lead 28-12 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half. At the 5:52 mark, Arop drove in for a layup to cut the lead to 12, but the Hawkeyes responded with another offensively dominant stretch to take their largest lead of the game at 23 points with 40 seconds left to play.
JJ White would close the half with a jumper, and Iowa led 49-28 at halftime.
Inside the Second Half
Sutton scored immediately out of the break cutting the lead to under 20 for Omaha, but P. McCaffrey went on to score the next seven points for Iowa. Marshall's three-pointer with 16:57 on the clock got Omaha back within 19, but it was the closest the Mavericks would get for the remainder of Monday's game.
Midway through the half, Josh Dix connected from outside for a 30-point Iowa lead. He'd hit two more before time expired for Iowa. Payton Sandfort had a quite night offensively for Iowa but helped the team to it's largest lead of the night with a jumper at the 5:34 mark that gave the Hawkeyes a 38-point advantage.
Luke Jungers connected on two straight Omaha possessions in an attempt to spark a late rally, but Iowa hit late baskets to win, 100-64.
Game Notes
-Brougham set a career-high in blocks Monday night. His seven blocks also marks a Division I single-game record for the Mavericks.
-Monday marked the first time this season Omaha didn't have a player score double-figures.
-It was the first game of a seven-game road stretch for the Mavericks, and the preliminary game to the Emerald Coast Classic Omaha will participate in later this week.
