OMAHA, Neb. – Colorado College scored two goals late in the second period and hung on for a 3-2 win over the Omaha hockey team on Saturday at Baxter Arena.
The loss dropped the Mavericks to 13-14-5 overall and 7-10-3-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in sixth place. The Tigers improved to 11-17-2 overall and 4-14-2-0/1 in the conference, moving them seventh.
It took the Mavericks just 1:50 to get on the board.
Josh Boyer won a puck battle behind the Colorado College net and set up
Teemu Pulkkinen for a one-timer. It was Pulkkinen's seventh goal of the year.
The Tigers tied the game on a power play late in the period. Ben Copeland set up a Nick Halloran for a one-timer from the left circle at 17:29.
Omaha retook the lead on a nifty passing play at 11:48 of the second period.
Joey Abate, with a defender on him, wheeled and fed
Kevin Conley in the slot, and his one-timer beat goalie Matt Vernon for his 12th goal of the season.
But the Tigers would tie the game less than a minute and a half later on a goal from Andrew Gaus and then took the lead at 19:14 when Zach Berzolla wired a shot past
Isaiah Saville to make it 3-2 after two.
In spite of trailing in the third, the Mavericks were outshot 10-9 in the third and could not manage the equalizer, even when pulling Saville for an extra attacker.
Saville made 30 saves while Vernon had 22 as the Tigers outshot the Mavericks, 33-24.
The Mavericks make their final road trip of the regular season next week, visiting Miami for games on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29.
