Omaha Drops Mid-Week Game to Creighton

PAPILLION, Neb. – The Omaha baseball team dropped a 10-6 game against in-state rival Creighton Wednesday night (May 9) at Werner Park. 

Despite being down six runs mid-way through the contest, the Mavericks were able to cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the fifth, before the Bluejays closed it out with a four-run win. 

Omaha falls to 14-29 overall while Creighton improves to 28-15 on the regular season. Creighton's Ian Evans earned the win (3-1) through 4.0 innings giving up seven hits and three runs with one strikeout, while Grant Suponchick falls to 1-3 overall giving up three runs. 

Adam Caniglia finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a homer, while the Bluejays' Will Robertson went 4-of-5 with three RBI and a home run. In the top of the third, the Mavericks found themselves in a 5-0 hole. Caniglia helped score the first run for Omaha in the bottom of the third with a single to center that brought home Cole Thibodeau.

After being down 7-1 through the top of the fifth, the Mavericks mounted a comeback and cut the Creighton lead at two. Four runs were scored to close out the half inning, which included three-straight singles. Suponchick and Ben Palensky both singled for an RBI, followed by Max Gamm, who recorded a two-RBI single that brought the duo home and cut the deficit to 7-5. 

Creighton responded in the top of the eighth with a two-RBI single, capped off by a sacrifice fly in the next inning for the 10th run. The final Maverick run came in the bottom of the ninth off Caniglia's solo-shot homer to left field. 

Omaha now shifts its focus to the final regular season road series at in-league foe Oral Roberts, which takes place Friday (May 11) through Sunday (May 13). The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT) in Tulsa, Okla. Links to live stats, video and radio information will be available on OMavs.com
