TULSA, Okla. – Omaha dropped the first game of the road series at Oral Roberts 7-1 Friday evening (May 11). The Mavericks fall to 14-30 overall (9-13 Summit League) while the Golden Eagles improve to 31-16 and 20-5 in league action.
Thomas DeBonville led the way for the Mavericks hitting 2-for-4, including a sixth-inning home run for his fourth of the season. Oral Robert's Trevor McCutchin went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run.
On the mound
Joey Machado falls to 4-6 overall pitching 5.1 innings with a strikeout, four runs and six walks, while
Cal Hehnke provided two strikeouts, giving up two hits and no walks in relief. Oral Roberts' Josh McMinn earned the win (4-6), pitching all nine innings with nine strikeouts, two walks, four hits and one earned run given up.
The Mavericks fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. After neither team could get on the board for the next three frames, DeBonville's home run tied it up in the top of the sixth. The Golden Eagles, however, were able to respond by loading the bases and plating three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.
The lead increased to 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh after Oral Roberts was able to score three more off loaded bases to close out the game with the six-run win. Omaha returns to action tomorrow (May 12) for the second game of the road series in Tulsa, Okla.
