TULSA, Okla. – Omaha baseball dropped a narrow 7-6 decision in the second game of the series at Oral Roberts Saturday night (May 12). The Mavericks fall to 14-31 overall (9-14 Summit League) while the Golden Eagles improve to 33-16 overall and a league-leading 21-5 record.
After Omaha led in the bottom of the eighth by one run with two outs, Oral Roberts plated two runs for the come-from-behind win.
Starter
Spencer Koelewyn tossed three strikeouts allowing three runs and five hits through 5.0 innings, while
Cal Hehnke (0-4) earned the loss in relief with four strikeouts. Oral Roberts' relief pitcher Grant Townsend improved to 5-0 with four strikeouts and gave up two runs, and Kyler Stout earned the save.
After the Golden Eagles went up 2-0 through the first inning, the Mavericks were able to even the score in the top of the second when
Braden Rogers (2-for-4) tripled to right center for two RBI that brought home
Ben Palensky and
Grant Suponchick. The Omaha lead increased to 4-2 in the top of the fifth after
Adam Caniglia reached on a fielding error for two RBI that scored a pair of unearned runs for
Tyler Daugherty and
Keil Krumwiede.
A single RBI in the top of the sixth for Oral Roberts cut the Omaha lead to one, and the Golden Eagles eventually regained a 5-4 lead in the next inning off back-to-back singles for two RBI.
Thomas DeBonville (1-for-4) homered in the top of the seventh for a two-run shot that also scored Krumwiede, which gave Omaha a 6-5 lead. The Golden Eagles, however, were able to respond and plate two runs to win the second game of the series.
